The
Thousand Islands Association |
 |
|
| The
Thousand Islands Association (TIA) is a
non-profit organization made up of approximately
1500 sailors, power boaters, and cottage owners.
Founded in 1922, the organization's membership
is roughly half Canadian and half American, with
a common interest in keeping the St. Lawrence
River a safe and beautiful area. One of the most
visible functions carried out by TIA is helping
boaters avoid many of the dangerous shoals which
populate the St. Lawrence River. |

Fish
caught in the 1000 Islands/Ontario/Canada area! |
 |
|
|
Walleye |
Average
Size: Up to 10 lbs.
Times & Places: Spring/Fall:
inshore shallows, Summer: deeper shoals
Outline:
The walleye is a popular gamefish known for its
delicate, delicious flavor and light-tackle
fight. Five-to ten-pounders are common and
trophies have been known to be as much as 18
pounds. Ice fishing makes for great walleye
action all winter long.
Walleye
Unique to this part of the world, the walleye
attracts anglers from around the globe. It's one
of the tastier catches with over eight million
fish reeled in each year. You'll find these golden
swimmers throughout the province from the Great
Lakes (Superior, Huron, Erie, and Ontario) to
Muskoka to the Bay of Quinte and Northern
Ontario's cold waters.
|
|
Muskie |
Average
Size: Up to 35 lbs.
Times & Places: Late
June: shallow weedbeds, Aug-Sept: near drop-offs
Outline: Gananoque/1000
Islands is a top muskellunge area. The fish
average 12 to 30 pounds and an occasional 40- to
50-pound tackle-buster is taken. Special fishing
gear is needed to land this wily fish. A guide
is strongly recommended
Muskie
Powerful fish with razor-sharp teeth, muskie
(muskellunge) can be a rare catch even where
they're common. They average 4.5 - 9 kg (10 - 20
lbs.) but also come in trophy sizes with a 29 kg
(65-pounder) holding the Ontario record.
|
| Largemouth
Bass |
Average
Size: Up to six pounds
Times & Places:
Around islands, off islands, in bays
Outline: Tough,
rod-bending fish. One- to two-pound largemouths
are abundant, two- to three-pound fish are
common, and six- to eight-pound trophies are not
uncommon. Fish shallow in spring and fall, move
deeper in mid-summer months.
Bass Largemouth
Catch bass in all regions of Ontario.
Largemouth bass swim mainly in warmer water bodies
with shallow cover. Popular among fly-rodders,
smallmouth bass prefer cooler, deeper digs from
Great Lakes' shoals to the scenic glacial lakes of
the Canadian Shield.
|
| Yellow
Perch |
Average
Size: 8 to 10 inches
Times & Places:
Shallow bays, creek mouths, marshes
Outline: Ontario/1000
Islands perch is an angler's delight. They
typically run eight to ten inches, but some
jumbo perch are the rule in some parts of the
river. There is great ice fishing for perch in
the St. Lawrence, with bucket-filling catches
common throughout the winter.
|
| Northern
Pike |
Average
Size: Up to 12 lbs.
Times & Places: All
year: shallow bays and marshes
Outline: Vicious
strikes are their trademark. Use large spoons,
plugs, spinners or live bait and hold on,
because Northern grow big and mean in
Ontario/1000 Islands. A number of fish from 15
to 20 pounds are caught each year in the St.
Lawrence.
Northern Pike
Ontario offers the most diverse northern pike
fishing on the continent. Northerns can grow to
great lengths and catches over 9 kg (20 lbs.) are
considered trophies. The bait and gear you use
will vary by location and season. Get good advice
from outfitters and charter operators and count on
the local bait shop for special "expert" tips.
|
| Smallmouth
Bass |
Average
Size: Up to six pounds
Times & Places:
Around islands, off islands, in bays
Outline: Tough,
rod-bending fish. One- to two-pound smallmouths
are abundant, two- to three-pound fish are
common, and six- to eight-pound trophies are not
uncommon. Fish shallow in spring and fall, move
deeper in mid-summer months.
Bass Smallmouth
Catch bass in all regions of Ontario.
Largemouth bass swim mainly in warmer water
bodies with shallow cover. Popular among fly-rodders,
smallmouth bass prefer cooler, deeper digs from
Great Lakes' shoals to the scenic glacial lakes
of the Canadian Shield.

Sturgeon,
an ancient fish species in the St. Lawrence
since the end of the ice age,
was thought to have disappeared, until 1994 a
small population was discovered.
Sturgeon
A lover of Northern Ontario's cold waters,
the sturgeon is the world's largest freshwater
fish. With characteristics like an under-slung
mouth, whiskers and bony plates on both sides,
it's unmistakable. Sturgeons grow to a length of
90 - 145 cm (3 - 5 ft.) and prefer larger rivers
and lakes.
Carp
Often overlooked, the tasty carp is found in
many shallow and weedy or muddy areas of the
Great Lakes and southern inland waters. With
Ontario's carp fishery under-utilized, there are
plenty of big ones waiting to be lured to your
hook.
